I want to discuss the word "focus" as this applies to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. The gaining of weight requires no effort or focus whatsoever....basically pay attention to everything/everyone else in your life and you will find the weight going on. To lose weight requires focus...focus on your meal planning, focus on the avoidance of the derailing food sources, focus on scheduling exercise time, etc.
How do we maintain and NOT lose focus? Writing your weight down once a week next to your scale at home will allow you to see the reality of the weight situation...either good or bad. Try to think several times a day about how much better your life would be if you lost the weight you desire. Team up with someone/others who are on a similar mission to become healthier and happier by achieving weight loss. Buy a really great outfit that would look great on you at your desired weight and ha it prominently visible in your closet.
Focus on "you". Do not allow outside forces to make you lose this focus.

Weight loss and keeping focus
Good morning to my faithful readers out there....I am not sure if there are 5 of you out there, 50, 500 or 5000. I do know that when I see my patients I ask them whether they are reading these entries daily and i dare say that less than 10% of my them say "yes". Of course I am not hurt or insulted by this, but I do positively implore them to try to make this a daily ritual. Why? Certainly not that what I am writing is the most inspiring, thought -provoking prose that will motivate everyone reading it to lose weight every day. It is because I understand that for people to lose weight and keep that weight off, they have to remain focused. As soon as we stop thinking about our weight loss efforts, I guarantee that weight will start going up again. It takes NO effort or focus to gain weight...it takes LOTS of effort and focus to lose it.
How can you remain focused? Certainly, keeping an awareness of your weight by WRITING IT DOWN ON A CLIPBOARD NEXT TO YOUR HOME SCALE and acting quickly on any weight gain observed will help keep you from ever putting lots of weigth back on. Thinking daily about the reasons why you need/want to lose weight will help you remain focused. Getting a daily dose of your good ol' doctor may also keep your weight loss efforts on the forefront of your mind and allow you to make better daily choices.
When you have personal issues, work stress, etc. it is difficult for you to focus on "you". The focus is necessary and for you to lose weight and keep it off, you must remain focused.

weight loss and focus
The gaining of weight requires no thought processes, concentration or focus. Basically, do what is fun, do not think about caloric content and place your thoughts on everything else in your life without regard to your dietary intake. This will result in weight gain. Easy, simple and basically a "no-brainer".
However, to lose weight, one must place lots of thought into this and focus. Moreover, the actions required to lose weight, such as planning meals, foregoing high-caloric food sources, giving up that glass of wine at night...all of these are not "fun".
Focus is required to lose weight and when that focus is lost, we start losing the weekly battles. Try to maintain your focus and remember at all times why it is so important for you to lose weight.

300th Post
I noticed that today's entry is my 300th posting on this site. Every day I ask my patients if they are reading this and I think it is a somewhat embarrassing question, because if they are not (and well over 75% are not reading this daily) they feel awkward in that perhaps they will be hurting my feelings.
Why am i writing daily entries? Clearly, it is somewhat difficult to find new/interesting topics to cover about weight loss. Moreover, it does take time daily to do this.
Answer: I truly believe that when people do not think about their weight loss efforts, they are doomed to failure. If your goal was to gain weight, you do not have to think about this for one second...do what is fun and do what your body tells you to do. However, if your goal is to lose weight, that requires constant mentation/planning/focus etc. As soon as we lose this focus, we start losing the battle. I am trying to put a voice in your head daily urging you to keep "in the zone" and maintain your focus. While you are in our program, we see you weekly, you are paying money, you are getting prescription meds, etc...not as important to get these daily messages. However, when you leave the weekly visits, it is a much more vulnerable and perilous time as this relates to losing weight. I am hoping to be that voice in your head (other than your own) to help you maintain focs and direction.
On to the next 300 posts...please join me for the journey.
