Weight Loss....Our book....

Good Saturday morning...

I am asking for your help. Donna, Julia and I will be co-authoring a book about weight loss. We are having a number of chapters already included including stress eating, childhood obesity, post menopasual weight gain, and lots of others.

However, we wanted to get some ideas from you, our patient, as to what subjects may be of great interest to you in a book written about weight issues.

So many weight loss books are "hype" books designed to make weight loss sound easy...Catchy titles, cartoon pictures, simplistic explanations, etc. We would like our book to be much more serious and address the "real" issues involved.

Sooo.....Help!!! please send us some ideas for content that would make this book very special.

We will plan a really nice book signing event in the spring and we will make sure you get an invitation!

1. In the Childhood Obesity chapter: It would be interesting to include a discussion of the long-term effects of childhood obesity on your health as an adult (e.g., any statistics regarding the probability that you will be an obese adult, do you have increased health risks (cancer, cardiovascular, etc.) even if you lose weight as an adult; have you created additional fat cells, etc.). Also do the health risks of childhood obesity vary depending on the timing of the onset of the obesity (e.g., early childhood versus adolescence)?

2. Tips for maintaining focus both during weight loss (especially during the slow loss periods) and during the maintenance phase

3. Weight loss myths

Also a suggestion for book signings – you might consider setting up tables at some of the charity walks/runs that are associated with obesity and at the Health and Fitness Expo that is held each January.

Another topic: How alcohol can ruin your diet. Both empty calories and self control issues.

I remeber as a kid growing up in a dual working parent family who pinched every penny. That being said I also struggle to this day with putting down my fork when I "feel" full versus sitting there eating until the plate is empty! God love my Mom, I miss her very much but I will always remember having to "stay at that table until your plate is empty" I think that there are many habits we learn when we are kids that really do stick with us all our life. I am learning how to better portion mty plate now so even IF I feel I have to finish the plate, I do know that it is a healthier portion and that I am not over eating.

two topics for consideration:

weight gain during peri-menopause ... what happens when you have irregular and/or frequent cycles (typically women get the PMS cravings, when you get them 2x per month, or more, your body can't keep up and you end up gaining lots of weight. Every woman i know gains weight right before her menses.

Next topic: it would be nice to see a discussion in the exercise section that addresses 'yoga'. Does this fall in to the aerobic or anaerobic exercise? Can this take the place of weight training or resistance training? the heart rate gets elevated, people 'glow' - does this take the place of cardio training? etc.
