Yesterday we had a number of patients cancel their appointments for followup visits in the program. This is a very common occurrence after a three-day weekend. Why? The reason is that a number of people gain weight during the holiday weekends because of excessive eating and drinking. When Tuesday rolls around, there is a feeling of "embarrassment" or a fear that when they weigh in there will be a rebuke or negative reaction from us.
After a weight gaining week, this is the exact time NOT to cancel your appointment. There is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed and certainly our role here is supportive...not judgemental like a parent or a teacher if you "mess up".
Holiday weekends are very challenging because it seems as if everyone around us is consumming alcohol, eating high-caloric foods, etc. It is very difficult not to partake of these activities and if weight gain occurs, IT IS OKAY!!! Not every week will be a successful weight loss week. The key is monitoring what happens by writing down your weight weekly and having a reaction planned based on what you see. When you are in the visit phase of your program of course come in that week. We will help you focus, prescribe you the med, and get you back on track!

I can relate. Eating "white processed" foods and overindulging on alcohol is the standard for both my and my husband's sides of the family. I knew the first night we arrived that pizza was on the menu so I waited and when it arrived I ate my weird meal of lean meat, greek yogurt with splenda and vanilla and a quartered red bell pepper. By the time I finished, all the pizza was gone. The rest of the weekend was harder but I still got back on the wagon by Monday. Travel is another "eating good" killer. Very hard to maintain good habits when your only source of food is a restaurant, even with the better choices they have, hidden salt and fat is still lurking about;-)
