Okay, so after I attend the open house at the Iowa clinic I stepped out to a restaurant near the office that the staff recommended....
First thing they piut on the table was a huge plate of buttered rolls, more butter, cole slaw and cottage cheeses..interesting array of food...
Menu of course was chock full of all time favorites...Yes, steaks, chicken and other high protein choices compatible with trying to lose weight but all accompanied by massive stuffed potatoes, mashed potatoes etc....
The choices provided to us in most restaurants are bountiful and tasty..but very challenging to our weight loss efforts. Try to choose restaurants that are more conducive to your efforts. Human nature prompts us to select the restaurants with the best deals...the most food for the money...try to avoid this temptation and choose the places known for their quality, not quantity.
Back to DC tonight....the sky in Iowa is beautiful at sunset...different than our area...there was something kind of magic about it...hmmmm..Posner moving to Iowa??? Laughing....about as much chance for that to happen as Posner retiring....zero to none

weight loss and restaurant choices
The weekend usually means some diversionary fun times, and for many of us, a meal or two out is something we ook forward to. When youy are in a weight-losing mode, it is important to not only make the right choices in the restaurant, but it also is very helpful to choose the right type of venue that is compatible with your plans.
As success for long term weight loss requires an emphasis on proteins and vegetables, most restaurants offer many compatible choices. Appetizers of seafood or salads followed by a large protein dish with vegetables are easily found at most restaurants.
It is the "peripherals" that can demage your entire week of hard work on becoming healthier and happier. Peripherals? The predinner alcohol, wine with dinner, bread and butter brought before the food, the potatoes that are a part of the main dish and of course that ultimate dessert tray choice.
Buffets?? Fuggetaboutit....They test the very fabric of human nature..avoid them!
You can go out and have a great time and stil make those choices that keep you on goal. Check out the restaurant menu on line and even think about the choices before you go. Losing weight requires planning...so plan to go to a restaurant that allows you all the fun but not all of the calories. And do NOT give into the pressure of others at the table to share a dessert!

weight loss and restaurant choices
Good morningl...I know you Steelers fans are happy.
Over the weekend, I went to an Italian buffet restaurant at the Gaylord Hotel at the National Harbor. A bountifull display of cheeses, breads, pasta, salad, carved meats, brick oven pizzas and lots of other high-caloric foods. And, of course, there was a dessert bar with canolis, ice cream pastries and cakes. The price of this was 32 bucks.
Needless to say, the overwhelming majority of the people there were morbidly obese. I saw plates heaped with foods and the dessert bar was packed. Yes, your Doctor went up 3 times for food.
This issue here is that if you have a weight control problem the very LASST restaurant choice should be an "ALL YOU CAN EAT" buffet especially when it is fairly pricey. This tests the very limits of human nature...if we are paying lots for this we will make every effort to "get our money's worth".
Choose restaurants that you are ordering off o a menu and the more you eat, the more you are going to pay for this.

weight loss and TV ads
Good morning.,..
Some of the best adverisements on television that help us get more patients are not the ones we run...it is the incessant commercials from fast food places and other restuarants that entice people to eat their "fun" foods....but it is exactly these food sources that contribute to the growing obesity epidemic in America.
Yesterday, I was astounded to see a Taco Bell commercial which showed some HUGE concoction of beef, cheese, fillers, and other stuff wrapped in this tortilla thing...and all for 89 cents!! 89 cents??? Are you kidding me??? You could feed a family of 4 on that type of food for less than 10 dolllars. Then comes the "meal deals" advertised that make us feel like a dummy if we dont include the chips or fries and soda.
Some of the sit=down restaurants offer up "unlimited fries" and I watched the football game at a place Thursday nite which ha the pitch : "ALL YOU CAN EAT WINGS AND UNLIMITED BEER" for 25 bucks.
Beware of marketing hype and I strongly recommend that you stay away from fast ffod places and "unlimited, all you can eat" places.

weight loss and restaurants
Last nite we were out at a "Family" restaurant near my office and I was amazed to see that easily 75% of the people in the restaurant were morbidly obese...not just overweight. The restaurant has very good food, very modest prices and portions are incredibly large. Most of the dishes include lots of carbs...pizzas, gyros, pasta dishes, etc. The appetizer choices include such healthy choices as cheese fries and onion rings.
I am not knocking the restaurant at all...they offer great value. What I am bringing up though is my patients' choice of restaurants. Going out to lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch etc. is a "treat"...a break from the routine. It is a good time to relax, talk about issues, etc. But if you are in a weight losing mode, try to make a good choice in restaurant that will support your efforts. Placing yourself in a restaurant that has a menu with only a few "good" choices will make it more difficult than being at a place thathas lots of variety for you. Yes, you can go into this family restaurant and order a steak and vegetables, but you will see around you way too many tempting choices that may sway your decision. Pick a place to go to that is still a treat for you, but has healthy choices. Remember at all times that buffets are the worst! Nothing challenges human nature more than offering someone a small amount of food or a large amount at the same price.
Tonight 11pm channel 9 news story...tune in to see whether SP is labelled as the BEST weight loss program in town or will we be smeared???? News at 11!!! laughing....have a great friday!

weight loss and restaurants
This weekend we went to dinner with some friends and one of the ladies is in a weight losing mode. The menu at the restaurant did not have a dish that she felt was compatible with her dietary plan, and she asked the waiter if the chef could prepare a special fish dish for her. GLADLY they said...and then went on to bring out a wonderful dish that was completely in synch with her needs. Point here: do not be afraid to ask for a specially prepared dish if the menu doesn't contain choices you are happy with. Most restaurants (especially in these difficult financial times) are happy to accomodate your needs.
On a separate note: I am in New Jersey attending a grand opening of a Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Center that is opening in a Bergen County GYN doctor's office. Dr. Cho and her staff are very enthusiastic and they are going to help lots of people in this Northern N.J. area lose weight. Tomorrow nite they have a "Launch Party" and I have been asked to be there to discuss the program to a number of their prespective patients. We now have physicians in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Southern Maryland and now New Jersey doing our program! It is really fun for me to see our program expand to help other people outside the D.C. area. The really cool thing ("cool"..what a term from the 70s) for me is that my personal participation with the national expansion is limited allowing me to be right where I want to be...in my Burke clinic taking care of my medicine patients and Serotonin-Plus patients. Be back tomorrow!

choosing wisely at meals
At restaurants there are lots of "accompanying" things that make for a much higher calorie count...the bread that comes out with butter, the before dinner alcohol-containing drink, the side dishes and the dessert tray that is then presented.
Picking and choosing the "right" parts of the restaurant meal can go a long way in helping your dietary efforts...give up the cocktail....leave the bread alone....and....order that really good steak or lobster....but have a vegetable as opposed to mashed potatoes...and....the dessert tray??? it is not worth it and react to your senation of satiety...there is no way you are still hungry at that point!

Restaurants and weight loss
Last night at dinner my son, who is trying to lose some weight, offered this advice:
Toward the end of dinner, when he is feeling not hungry anymore, he purposefully puts his napkin on the plate to signal the waiter/waitress to remove the plate. There may be some potatoes or other food sourses still left, but Brian told me that if the plate remains there, he will find himself still picking at the remnanst almost absentmindedly. If the plate is removed, he cannot do this.
The other issue certainly is the "dessert tray". Who truly feels any "hunger" at the end of a restaurant meal to then have a high-caloric dessert???
By removing the pre-dinner alcohol drink, the bread that is brought to the table, a high-caloric side dish and the dessert, you can save a thousand calories and still have a great time!
On a non-weight loss note: New do for your doctor!!!a 2-year old yellow lab....Tanner....VERY sweet and athletic....
